Decoration Day Event

May 30th, 2022

In 1890, the term Decoration Day was adopted to honor fallen soldiers of the Civil War. Eventually, this term was changed to Memorial Day to honor all fallen soldiers, from every war. Green Hill has soldiers from many different wars including the Revolutionary War, Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, and the Korean War.

This year we have chosen to use the term Decoration Day, as it is our hope to have the headstones of fallen soldiers from all wars decorated with the American Flag. The caretakers will have a booth set-up with flags available for a minimum of a $5 donations. We will also be hosting our first ever Memorial Day Scavenger Hunt, which will focus on finding soldiers from various wars, Just scan the QR code or pick up a paper list from the flag booth to participate!

2nd Annual: Picnic at Green Hill

May 29, 2021: Starting at 2pm

This year we are bringing back our annual picnic and our FREE historical tours of the Cemetery. We will also be having a yard sale and bake sale throughout the day to help raise money for Green Hill. Green Hill is a privately owned Cemetery that was established in 1854. We do not receive any funding from the state and all work done by the caretakers is strictly on a volunteer basis. We are hoping to establish a sense of community at the Cemetery that has been lost. Cemeteries use to be a place people would visit to celebrate the life of their loved ones. During the Victorian era eating in cemeteries became a “fad. " One reason for this was because of the epidemics raging across the country: Yellow fever and cholera flourished, children passed away before turning 10, women died during childbirth. Death was a constant visitor for many families, and in cemeteries, people could “talk” and break bread with family and friends, both living and deceased. We think this tradition should live on before our permanent residents are forgotten. Admission to the event is FREE. The only opportunity for purchasing items are via the yard sale or bake sale. We accept donations to support the event costs, but do not expect them. NO PUBLIC RESTROOMS.
